SURF SPORTS
The South Brighton clubs enjoys a long history of being one of New Zealand’s strongest clubs in the competition arena. The club won its first National title in 1944 when a team of juniors won the Junior 6 Man R&R event at Lyall Bay. Since then the club has won over 300 National titles in both team and individual events. Our surf sports programme strives to deliver high performing athletes and fit lifeguards. Our athletes perform across most surf sport disciplines - including surf and beach events and surf canoe. The coaching programme caters for beginner, intermediate and advanced athletes and our successes are testament to the quality of the coaching available to our members. The South Brighton Surf squad train all year round and we provide a comprehensive training programme that spans the full range of rescue skills and test competitors’ strength, fitness and agility in swimming, running, paddling a surf ski, board or canoe.
2024 / 2025 SURF SPORT SEASON
The sport component of the 2024 / 2025 sports program has commenced with preseason training at Taiora QE2 pool and running. Practice for the ILS based pool competitions has also started. This year the club will be offering a comprehensive board/ski program under our new head coach Steve Drabble and his assistants as well as a beach program. A comprehensive summer training offering that entails board, ski and ironman will start in September 2024 and go through until Nationals 2025 in Gisborne.
This season we are starting a five-year plan to expand and build on the last few seasons success. The plan is based on athlete engagement, participation, achievement and the goal of “Kapa Kotahi” - One Team and One Club.
