Duration:
Junior surf runs every Sunday from October to March (generally starting on Labour Weekend).
When and Where:
9.30am - 11am (please arrive at the club by 9.15am for a 9.30am start).
We meet on the grass at the beach side of the club and there are signs to show each age group where they should meet their coach and friends.
What Happens?
It's important to know that surf clubs rely heavily on volunteers and surf isn't a 'drop and run' sport. All of our volunteer Sunday coaches rely on parent help to ensure things run smoothly and safely. You don't need to be a strong swimmer or have any surf experience at all, just a smile and a willingness to help out.
Activities are always age/ability-specific and designed to hide the learning in fun as much as possible.
With younger kids, we play beach and water games to gradually build confidence. In the older age groups we develop stronger skills like bodysurfing and learning to spot rips and dangers, and we slowly graduate from playing on boogie boards, to learning to paddle foam boards and eventually full paddleboards.
Check out the parent handbook on this page, which has some great information about what to expect from junior surf.
What to Bring and Wear
Please bring your high-vis vest and club cap 'beanie' every Sunday as its a requirement that everyone wears them whilst in the water. These are available to purchase once you've joined the club.
Kids should arrive wearing their togs with clothes over the top, and wetsuits can be put on after beach activities. We all know what Christchurch weather can be like, so it's a good idea to be prepared for both warm and cold!
On Sundays and at carnivals, many kids put their gear (sunscreen, goggles, wetsuit etc) into a plastic flexi tub like this, which makes it easier to carry everything and deal with the sand/wet gear at the end of the day.
Equipment
South Brighton provides gear for all levels of ability from boogie boards right through to fibreglass boards for older kids. We ask everyone to treat club gear with care and respect, particularly the boards - this means carrying rather than dragging them, and returning them to correct storage area rinsed and free from sand.
Sausage Sizzle:
Our BBQ sausage sizzle is always in hot demand and will be in action every Sunday - offering $3 sausages with both meat and vegetarian options. You can pre-purchase a $30 card for 10 sausages that can be used throughout the season.
We'll have an eftpos machine available at our first session and all other weeks will be cash only.
Carnivals/Competitions:
Junior surf is all about having fun and building skills on Sundays.
Once kids reach U8, they have the option to take part in carnivals as well, if they're keen. You can find out more about this in the Junior Surf Sports section.
