Originally from Muriwai Surf Club in Auckland, Pat has been involved in surf since age 14 and has been proud to call South Brighton home since 2023. A sports enthusiast himself, Pat has competed in surf lifesaving, kayaking, Coast to Coast and NZ Ironman Triathlon to name a few. A former police officer, with a sport science degree and a strong coaching/training background, Pat believes in acknowledging progress and effort as much as outcomes, and fostering independence so athletes don't just know what to do, but why.
Malcolm is a dedicated firefighter, surf lifesaver, coach, and father of two. Originally from Brighton, Dunedin, he has over 40 years of surf life saving experience and 25 years in the fire service. A former athlete in rugby and athletics, Malcolm blends beach, gym, and track training to stay fast and strong. He’s represented his region nationally and globally and has coached young athletes across Canterbury for over 20 years, including as a NZ development team coach. His focus on early-season technique sets the foundation for peak performance when it counts.
Zac is currently our top ski paddler with a host of ski achievements under his belt including silver and bronze medals in the Open Mens Ski at NZ Nationals. He has won the mens double ski title, and was part of the Surf Life Saving NZ High Performance Squad in 2020. He juggles training (as an active competitor still), with coaching and being a full time builder.
Rhys is a lifeguard, surf sports athlete, competiitve footballer and a student at Shirley Boys High School. He has been a part of South Brighton since the age of 4, and is a third year lifeguard and a second year U17 competitor. Rhys's energy and enthusiasm has helped him build a great rapport with our junior athletes, and he's committed to helping them improve their skills and confidence each season.
Amy is a former competitive swimmer who (many moons ago) held the New Zealand record for 1500 freestyle and won multiple NZ titles in distance freestyle, fly and IM. Joining surf lifesaving in her teens, Amy competed for Mairangi Bay and then Muriwai Surf Life Saving Club where she was in the NZ Development Squad, the NZ Makos team in the Australian Kelloggs Series, the Auckland Kelloggs team and won multiple NZ titles. Amy is a waterbaby at heart who loves coaching our junior swimmers through winter and beating her husband Pat at bodysurfing competitions in summer.
